Hillary Clinton, the Democratic US presidential nominee, recently described supporters of her opponent, Donald Trump, as a ‘basket of deplorables.’ It was neither a tactful nor an elegant phrase, and she later apologized for her remark. But she was more right than wrong. Trump has attracted many supporters whose views on race, for example, are indeed deplorable.

The problem is that many of these deplorable voters are also relatively uneducated, which makes Clinton’s remark look snobbish. Alas, the United States has too many relatively uneducated people.

[i]n 1971, the world abandoned gold because it was seen as an unnecessary constraint on the ambitions of politicians and big business. Over the last forty years, since fiat money (ongedekt geld svh) became the norm, the money supply has grown exponentially. We have seen the greatest growth in the money supply of money in history. Today ninety-seven per cent of all money is created as debt. Absurdly, the preferred solution of governments  to the debt crisis is to create yet more debt. David Morgan (expert zilvermarkt svh) sums up the problem with fiat money perfectly: 'You can never get enough of a currency that doesn't work — you can print it till kingdom come but you can't print wealth and you can't get yourself out of debt by making more debt. If you could print wealth Zimbabwe would be the most prosperous country on the planet — we all know it doesn't work.' It was the French philosopher Voltaire who said, 'All paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value — zero.'

that rhetoric would displace or at least overshadow epistemology; that is, the temptation to allow the problem of persuasion to overshadow the problem of knowledge. Democratic societies tend to become more concerned with what people believe than with what is true, to become more concerned with credibility than with truth,

Buruma’s bewijs hiervoor is dat ‘Trump has attracted many supporters whose views on race, for example, are indeed deplorable.’

[t]he problem is that many of these deplorable voters are also relatively uneducated, which makes Clinton’s remark look snobbish. Alas, the United States has too many relatively uneducated people.

We Were Eight Years In Power.

black voters well remembered the previous Clinton administration as well as her previous campaign. While her husband's administration had touted the rising tide theory, it did so while slashing welfare and getting ‘tough on crime,’ a phrase that stood for specific policies but also as rhetorical bait for white voters. One is tempted to excuse Hillary Clinton for having to answer for the sins of her husband. But in her 2008 campaign, Hillary Clinton evoked the old dichotomy between white workers and loafing (lummelende. svh) blacks, claiming to be the representative of ‘hardworking Amerians, white Americans.’ By the end of the 2008 primary campaign against Barack Obama, her advisers were hoping someone would discover the apocryphal ‘whitey tape,’ in which an angry Michelle Obama was alleged to have used the slur. During Bill Clinton's earlier campaign for president, it was Hillary Clinton herself who had employed the ‘super-predator’ theory of conservative William Bennett, who cast ‘inner-city’ children of that generation as ‘almost completely unmoralized’ and the font of ‘a new generation of street criminals... the youngest, biggest and baddest generation any society has ever known.’ The ‘baddest’ generation did not become super-predators. But by 2016, they were voters who judged Hillary Clinton's newfound consciousness to be lacking.

It's worth asking why the country has not been treated to a raft (een serie. svh) of sympathetic portraits of this ‘forgotten’ young black electorate, forsaken by a Washington bought off by Davos elites and special interests. They too toil in this new global economy. The unemployment rate for young black people (20.6 percent) in July of 2016 was double that of young white people (9.9 percent). And since the late 1970s, William Julius Wilson and other sociologists following in his wake have noted the disproportionate effect that the decline in ‘hardworking’ manufacturing jobs has had on African American communities. And if anyone should be angered by the devastation wreaked by the financial sector and a government that declined to prosecute the perpetrators, it is African Americans — the housing crisis was one of the primary drivers in the past twenty years of the wealth gap between black families and their country. But the cultural condescension and economic anxiety of black people is not news. Toiling blacks are in their proper state; toiling whites raise the specter of white slavery.

Moreover, a narrative of long-neglected working-class black voters, injured by globalization and the financial crisis, forsaken by out-of-touch politicians, and rightfully suspicious of a return of Clintonism, does not serve to cleanse the conscience of white people for having elected Donald Trump.

The New York Review of Books.

Bill Clinton made an insensitive racial remark about Barack Obama while his wife battled him for the Democratic nomination vote, it was claimed today.

The former U.S. president, whose wife Hillary battled Obama in the 2008 primary campaign, is said to have remarked of the current president: 'A few years ago, this guy would have been carrying our bags.’

Clinton allegedly made the insensitive remark to Senator Ted Kennedy in 2008, while trying to convince him to endorse Hillary for the Democratic nomination, according to The New Yorker.

In 1995, the criminologist and political scientist John DiIulio was invited to the White House to attend a working dinner on juvenile crime. “President Clinton took copious notes and asked lots of questions,” he reported. So what did DiIulio tell him? In late 1995 DiIulio wrote a magazine article that gives us a pretty good taste:

‘We’re talking about kids who have absolutely no respect for human life and no sense of the future… And make no mistake. While the trouble will be greatest in black inner-city neighborhoods, other places are also certain to have burgeoning youth-crime problems that will spill over into upscale central-city districts, inner-ring suburbs, and even the rural heartland. […]

They kill or maim on impulse, without any intelligible motive’ […] The buzz of impulsive violence, the vacant stares and smiles, and the remorseless eyes […] they quite literally have no concept of the future […] they place zero value on the lives of their victims, whom they reflexively dehumanize […] capable of committing the most heinous acts of physical violence for the most trivial reasons […] for as long as their youthful energies hold out, they will do what comes ‘naturally’: murder, rape, rob, assault, burglarize, deal deadly drugs, and get high.

It’s hardly surprising that this made an impression. A couple of months later, in early 1996, Hillary Clinton gave a speech about her husband’s anti-crime agenda. In particular, she noted his efforts against drug gangs:

‘We also have to have an organized effort against gangs, just as in a previous generation we had an organized effort against the mob. We need to take these people on. They are often connected to big drug cartels, they are not just gangs of kids anymore. They are often the kinds of kids that are called ‘super-predators’  —  no conscience, no empathy. We can talk about why they ended up that way, but first we have to bring them to heel (iemand dwingen te gehoorzamen. svh).’

In verband hiermee schreef de zwarte Amerikaanse auteur James Baldwin in zijn boek The Fire Next Time (1963):

The American Negro has the great advantage of having never believed the collection of myths to which white Americans cling: that their ancestors were all freedom-loving heroes, that they were born in the greatest country the world has ever seen, or that Americans are invincible in battle and wise in peace, that Americans have always dealt honorably with Mexicans and Indians and all other neighbors or inferiors, that American men are the world's most direct and virile, that American women are pure. Negroes know far more about white Americans than that; it can almost be said, in fact, that they know about white Americans what parents — or, anyway, mothers — know about their children, and that they very often regard white Americans that way. And perhaps this attitude, held in spite of what they know and have endured, helps to explain why Negroes, on the whole, and until lately, have allowed themselves to feel so little hatred. The tendency has really been, insofar as this was possible, to dismiss white people as the slightly mad victims of their own brainwashing.

In the case of the American Negro, from the moment you are born every stick and stone, every face, is white. Since you have not yet seen a mirror, you suppose you are, too. It comes as a great shock around the age of 5, 6, or 7 to discover that the flag to which you have pledged allegiance, along with everybody else, has not pledged allegiance to you. It comes as a great shock to see Gary Cooper killing off the Indians, and although you are rooting for Gary Cooper, that the Indians are you.

It comes as a great shock to discover that the country which is your birthplace and to which your life and identity has not, in its whole system of reality, evolved any place for you. The disaffection and the gap between people, only on the basis of their skins, begins there and accelerates throughout your whole lifetime. You realize that you are 30 and you are having a terrible time. You have been through a certain kind of mill and the most serious effect is again not the catalogue of disaster — the policeman, the taxi driver, the waiters, the landlady, the banks, the insurance companies, the millions of details 24 hours of every day which spell out to you that you are a worthless human being. It is not that. By that time you have begun to see it happening in your daughter, your son or your niece or your nephew. You are 30 by now and nothing you have done has helped you escape the trap. But what is worse is that nothing you have done, and as far as you can tell nothing you can do, will save your son or your daughter from having the same disaster and from coming to the same end.

We speak about expense. There are several ways of addressing oneself to some attempt to find out what that word means here. From a very literal point of view, the harbors and the ports and the railroads of the country — the economy, especially in the South — could not conceivably be what they are if it had not been (and this is still so) for cheap labor. I am speaking very seriously, and this is not an overstatement: I picked cotton, I carried it to the market, I built the railroads under someone else's whip for nothing. For nothing.

Illustrerend voor de actualiteit van Baldwin’s woorden is dat in 2013, na vier jaar Barack Obama als eerste zwarte president van de VS, Black Lives Matter (BLM) werd opgericht, ‘an international activist movement, originating in the African-American community, that campaigns against violence and systemic racism towards black people. BLM regularly holds protests against police killings of black people and broader issues of racial profiling, police brutality, and racial inequality in the United States criminal justice system.’

calls itself a civilized nation and which espouses the notion of freedom in the world. If it were white people being murdered, the Government would find some way of doing something about it. We have a civil rights bill now. We had the 15th Amendment nearly 100 years ago. If it was not honored then, I have no reason to believe that the civil rights bill will be honored now.

The American soil is full of corpses of my ancestors, through 400 years and at least three wars. Why is my freedom, my citizenship, in question now? What one begs American people to do, for all sakes, is simply to accept our history.

There is scarcely any hope for the American Dream. The people who are denied participation in it, by their very presence, will wreck it. And when that happens it will be a grave moment for the West.

In contrast, education accounted for only six percent of the budget.’

In hun uitgebreid gedocumenteerde studie Manufacturing Consent. The political economy of the Mass Media (1988) concludeerden de Amerikaanse geleerden Edward S. Herman en Noam Chomsky over de berichtgeving van de Amerikaanse mainstream-media:

In contrast to the standard conception of the media as cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitous in their search for truth and their independence of authority, we have spelled out and applied a propaganda model that indeed sees the media as serving a ‘societal purpose,’ but not that of enabling the public to assert meaningful control over the political process by providing them with the information needed for the intelligent discharge of political responsibilities. On the contrary, a propaganda model suggests that the ‘societal purpose’ of the media is to inculcate and defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state. The media serve this purpose in many ways: through selection of topics, distribution of concerns, framing of issues, filtering of information, emphasis and tone, and by keeping debate within the bounds of acceptable premises.

Beide wetenschappers stelden na ruim 400 pagina's documentatie tenslotte vast:

As we have stressed throughout this book, the U.S. media do not function in the manner of the propaganda system of a totalitarian state. Rather, they permit -- indeed, encourage -- spirited debate, criticism, and dissent, as long as these remain faithfully within the system of presuppositions and principles that constitute an elite consensus, a system so powerful as to be internalized largely without awareness. No one instructed the media to focus on Cambodia and ignore East Timor. They gravitated naturally to the Khmer Rouge and discussed them freely -- just as they naturally suppressed information on Indonesian atrocities in East Timor and U.S. responsibility for the aggression and massacres. In the process, the media provided neither facts nor analyses that would have enabled the public to understand the issues or the bases of government policies toward Cambodia and Timor, and they thereby assured that the public could not exert any meaningful influence on the decisions that were made. This is quite typical of the actual ‘societal purpose’ of the media on matters that are of significance for established power; not ‘enabling the public to assert meaningful control over the political process,’ but rather averting any such danger. In these cases, as in numerous others, the public was managed and mobilized from above, by means of the media's highly selective messages and evasions. As noted by media analyst W. Lance Bennett: ‘the public is exposed to powerful persuasive messages from above and is unable to communicate meaningfully through the media in response to the messages... Leaders have usurped enormous amounts of political power and reduced popular control over the political system by using the media to generate support, compliance, and just plain confusion among the public.’

Met andere woorden:

Given the imperatives of corporate organization and the workings of the various filters, conformity to the needs and interests of privileged sectors is essential to succes. In the media, as in other major institutions, those who do not display the requisite values and perspectives will be regarded as ‘irresponsible,’ ‘ideological,’ or otherwise aberrant, and will tend to fall by the wayside. While there may be a small number of exceptions, the pattern is pervasive, and expected. Those who adapt, perhaps quite honestly, will then be free to express themselves with little managerial control, and they will be able to assert, accurately, that they perceive no pressures to conform. The media are indeed free -- for those who adopt the principles required for ‘societal purpose.’

Bovendien geldt, volgens Chomsky en Herman dat:

[t]he technical structure of the media virtually compels adherence to conventional thoughts; nothing else can be expressed between two commercials, or in seven hundred words, without the appearance of absurdity that is difficult to avoid when one is challenging familiair doctrine with no opportunity to develop facts or argument… The critic must also be prepared to face a defamation apparatus against which there is little recourse, an inhibiting factor that is not insubstantial,

[t]he result is a powerful system of induced conformity to the needs of privilege and power.

In sum, the mass media of the United States are effective and powerful ideological institutions that carry out a system-supportive propaganda function by reliance on market forces, internalized assumptions, and self-censorship, and without significant overt coercion. This propaganda system has become even more efficient in recent decades with the rise of the national television networks, greater mass-media concentration, right-wing pressures on public radio and television, and the growth in scope and sophistication of public relations and news management.

the ‘societal purpose’ of the media to inculcate and defend the economic, social, and political agenda of privileged groups that dominate the domestic society and the state. The media serve this purpose in many ways: through selection of topics, distribution of concerns, framing the issues, filtering of information, emphasis and tone, and by keeping debate within the bounds of acceptable premisses.

Buruma’s probleem is evenwel, zoals Chomsky en Herman constateren, dat ‘[t]his system is not all-powerful, however. Government and elite domination of the media have not succeeded in overcoming the Vietnam syndrome and hostility to direct U.S. involvement in the destabilization and overthrow of foreign governments,’ een feit dat met de opkomst van internet alleen maar actueler is geworden.

[t]he organization and self-education of groups in the community and workplace, and their networking and activism, continue to be the fundamental elements in steps toward the democratization of our social life and any meaningful social change. Only to the extent that such developments succeed can we hope to see media that are free and independent,

aldus Edward Herman and Noam Chomsky. Dus toen in 2010 Ian Buruma in The Guardian oordeelde dat ‘China’s recent thuggish behavior is changing Asian opinions,’ en dat '[a]s the warm welcome given to Hillary Clinton on her recent swing through Asia — even in communist Vietnam — appears to show, south-east Asians are more than happy to hang on to Pax Americana for a bit longer, out of fear of China,' om tenslotte met evenveel bravoure te stellen dat '[o]ther Asian countries might even be drawn closer to Japan, the only alternative to the US as a counterbalance to the Middle Kingdom,'

overturns conventional thinking about the ascendency of Chima, showing how it will signal the end of the Western nation-state, and a future of ‘contested modernity,’

By far the best book on China to have been published in many years.’

HRC
“You know, to just be grossly generalistic, you could put half of Trump’s supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables. Right? The racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic...” Enzovoort.

Then, HRC continued: “But the other basket .... but that other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change. It doesn’t really even matter where it comes from. They don’t buy everything he says, but he seems to hold out some hope that their lives will be different. They won’t wake up and see their jobs disappear, lose a kid to heroin, feel like they’re in a dead end. Those are people we have to understand and empathize with as well.”

nummer twee: zelfmoord,

en nummer drie: leverziekte (alcohol misbruik).

Zie http://m.pnas.org/content/112/49/15078.full
